Using a Small Neck Knife
January 2002

George gave me this small neck knife the first time I met him.
Well, my initials aren't GAM, so I made a new sheath for it. I used suede so the sheath is very thin. Almost zero profile when worn under a shirt.
While on a winter scout outing, I came across a fire circle with some lumber scraps buried in snow. I thought it would be a nice chance to see how my neck knife would work as a splitter.
It worked fine. Of course, scrap lumber is a lot easier to split than branches and limbs, and pine is a lot easier to split than oak. But I was pleased at how well it worked. Once I created tinder in this manner, building a fire was a trivial process. It was cold - the warmth of the fire was welcomed!
