This is part 3 of my 2009 vacation. On Wednesday morning I left my hotel in Albuquerque, NM and continued west on I-40. If you are ever traveling through Arizona on I-40, be sure to visit the Petrified Forest. The highway through this national park roughly follows I-40. There are lots of turnouts on the highway, each of which requires minimal effort on your part. It would be a pleasant drive even if you never left your car, and I suspect that would add only about two hours to your trip.
